ABOUT ME
I am originally from the foot of the Campsie Hills outside Glasgow, Scotland. From a very early age art captured my imagination and allows me to express my creativity through an artistic process. I originally trained in Denmark at the Billede-Kunste Skolen, and then at the Edinburgh School of Art, but I still prefer to let my own wandering style and way of working remain, to learn from my own eyes and experiences. I tend to exhibit in small independent galleries as well as supporting local artist events.
At the simplest level I was probably drawn to art because it makes me happy. I think in pictures, so lots of things I look at give me an inspiration that simply has to be put to paper. I am curious about all I see and creating a representation of them is fundamentally the essence of me. I find the process of translating the visual inspiration that I have in my head onto a piece of work and how I can represent this most rewarding.
I paint because I love colour, texture and form. I love birds, cats and people and am drawn naturally to their character, grace and elegance. I also like to use observations of people in my work, and enjoy painting the human form.
The colours of Gauguin inspire me, as does the brightness and energy of Hockney and Schiele’s harrowing depiction of women
My work also involves an exploration of texture. At the moment I tend to work mostly in acrylic, applying other media to evoke the atmosphere of the piece. I will try a variety of styles and techniques and enjoy experimentation. I think it is for this reason that a lot of my work seems to take the form of picturesque story-telling.
